The cities of Santa Maria and Guadalupe announced earlier this month that they are planning to use a little over $9 million, awarded by the state, to help fund two major projects in the Santa Maria Valley area.

In Santa Maria, $4.8 million will go toward expanding the city’s wastewater treatment plant. The city of Guadalupe is expected to receive $4.75 million in funds to upgrade its facility.

The money is part of the approximately $25 million awarded to 29 agencies in Santa Barbara County to create an integrated regional water management plan.

According to city officials, expansion of the Santa Maria facility, which is estimated to cost $16 million, will increase the amount of wastewater processed from 9.5 million gallons per day to 13.5 million gallons per a day. Facility updates in Guadalupe are expected to increase the plant’s capacity from 1 million to 1.5 million gallons per day.
