Roadwork began Aug. 18 on the Kohl’s Shopping Center driveway intersection—a section of road that’s proved troublesome for Santa Maria drivers.

Santa Maria city officials hired a contractor to improve vehicle access on McCoy Lane and modify roadway markings.

The left turn access into and out of the commercial driveway to the Kohl’s Shopping Center and the Walgreen’s Shopping Center is currently prohibited, but right turns into and out of these driveways are still allowed.

The city reported that the work is being done to address drivers’ concerns about congestion and potential hazards of the current full-access driveways.

The temporary road markings and traffic equipment will allow the city to assess the effectiveness of the changes before the possible installation of a median. The Santa Maria Department of Public Works plans to review the project and develop a recommendation on the installation of a raised median.

For more information about the roadwork and potential raised median, contact the Santa Maria Department of Public Works at 925-0951, Ext. 225.
