Following her boss’ lead, Santa Barbara County’s assistant CEO and Human Resources director Sue Paul announced she will resign Oct. 1 to pursue other job opportunities.

Paul informed county CEO Mike Brown of her intentions in a letter dated Sep. 9. In it, Paul wrote that it had been a “genuine pleasure” to work for the county. Her departure comes just before Brown’s retirement at the end of October. The county is currently seeking a new CEO.

Brown promoted Paul to the assistant CEO position. In a letter to the Board of Supervisors informing them of Paul’s intention, Brown wrote that Paul “willingly undertook many very difficult assignments totally outside of her professional specialty of human resources.”

During Paul’s tenure, the county was recognized with the Human Capital Leadership Award by the Society for Human Resource Management. Paul was also credited with instituting the county’s pay-for-performance leadership project, as well as its employee furlough program.

Paul and other county officials failed to return calls seeking comment as of press time.
