Eighty-seven disappointed campers, including nine campers from the Good Samaritan Shelter in Santa Maria, couldn’t make it to Camp Fire’s Camp Natoma week-long summer camp in July due to unseasonable and extremely heavy rains.

The rain washed out a portion of the 3-mile dirt road that leads to camp.

“This is the first time camp has been cancelled due to rain as far as we know,” Camp Natoma Director Emily Starkie Zbin said in a press release. “We are hoping to accommodate the disappointed campers by creating a new camp session for them and others who would like to experience Camp Natoma, the week of Aug. 2 through Aug. 8.”

Campers can register at campnatoma.org or by calling 773-5126.

The session running from July 26 through Aug. 1 occured as planned, and the road was repaired for happy campers.

Camp Fire Central Coast of California is a nonprofit youth development organization, and has owned and operated the 360 acre Camp Natoma since 1941. Accredited by the American Camp Association, Camp Natoma is a rustic, residential summer camp, offering youth an opportunity to gain independence while experiencing a connection with nature, each other, and adult role models.
