Santa Maria Public Works’ traffic committee recommended that the city establish no-stopping zones at Adam and Oakley elementary schools, following parking lot construction at both school sites.
According to letters from Director of Public Works Steven Kahn, the no-stopping zones would help improve accessibility for school buses. They would help minimize potential conflicts with vehicles parked nearby and improve sight distance for vehicles leaving the parking lots, the letters said.
The zones would require curbs to be painted red, which the Public Works Department estimated would cost $200 at Adam Elementary School and $100 at Oakley Elementary School. Each school would lose two parking spots.
The Santa Maria City Council planned to vote on the item at its Jan. 17 meeting, but a vote was not cast by press time.
