• Read her lips: No higher taxes. Etta Waterfield, candidate for 33rd District Assembly, recently voiced her opposition to higher taxes by signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, authored by Americans for Tax Reform. “Unrestrained spending landed our state into the biggest budget crisis of our time,” Waterfield said in a release. “And, when the Democrats in Sacramento chose higher taxes over spending cuts last year, they sent a clear message that taxpayers get last priority. I strongly disagree.” Waterfield has raised more than $160,000 in the first half of 2009—more than twice that of her closest opponent. For the past six years, Waterfield has served on the Santa Maria Planning Commission, twice serving as the commission chair. She’s also the coordinator of the Santa Maria Valley Economic Development Commission for the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce.
