• The California Special Districts Association recognized Assembly member Katcho Achadjian as the 2014 legislator of the year in a Feb. 27 ceremony at the Avila Beach Community Building. A press release from the association said Achadjian was selected because of his “non-partisan spirit, support of local control, and close work with the local service specialists responsible for delivering water, fire protection, parks, health care, and other essential services.”

• State Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-Los Angeles) introduced a housing bill package on Feb. 25 that includes increasing the state’s low income housing tax credit by 
$300 million, creating an ongoing funding source for affordable-home development by increasing the fee for real-estate related documents, and using a portion of Proposition 47 funds to invest in rehousing and housing support for formerly incarcerated Californians.
