• Hey Obamans, check it out! On Aug. 21, the Democratic Club of Santa Maria Valley welcomes Obama District Campaign Coordinator Walter Heath, who will lead a discussion about the coordinated campaign for the Santa Maria Valley. Also, the draft of the local vision of the Democratic Platform will be presented. This work, recently crafted in a grassroots exercise hosted by the club, has been sent to the Democratic National Committee as part of a national participation process. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by an optional dinner at 6 p.m., and the meeting at 7 p.m. To RSVP for dinner, call 349-2708. The event will be held at IHOP Restaurant, 202 Nicholson Ave., in Santa Maria.

• Voting—it’s all the rage. The League of Women Voters will have a table set up after the 10 a.m. grand opening ceremony of the new Santa Maria Public Library to register voters. The booth will be open until 5 p.m. that day. Citizens who are at least 18 years old, who have moved or changed names, or wish to change political party affiliation can register at the League table. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization.
