• On Sept. 30, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson introduced after May’s Isla Vista stabbing and shooting tragedy. SB 505 requires local law enforcement to search the California Department of Justice’s database of gun purchases prior to conducting a welfare check on someone who is potentially a danger to themselves or others. The bill takes effect on Jan. 1, 2015.
• The gun restraining order bill authored by state Assembly members Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Sept. 30. AB 1014 makes it so that family members of someone who is showing signs of mental instability can request a court order to temporarily bar someone from using or purchasing a gun.
