Following former Santa Maria City Council member Marty Mariscal’s decision to withdraw from the race for the 33rd District Assembly seat, fellow Republican candidate and San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Katcho Achadjian (4th District) told the Sun: “I’m sorry to see him drop out. I had an opportunity to meet with him a couple times, and he sounded like a down-to-earth guy and a good business person who does his homework.”

On Oct. 21, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 811, a congressional resolution to designate October 2009 as National Principals Month. Rep. Susan Davis (D-California) introduced the resolution, which honors elementary, middle, and high school principals for their passion and dedication to students across the country. “As the federal government continues to emphasize the role of principals as the catalysts for school reform efforts, it is only appropriate for the U.S. Congress to recognize these dedicated professionals in the month when the brightest and best among them are being honored,” Gail Connelly, National Association of Elementary School Principals executive director, said in a release to the media.
