Responding to comments in the media regarding the U.S. Census, Congresswoman Lois Cappsās (D-Santa Barbara) office released a statement stressing that āthe Census is far from over, and California can up its numbers. … The counties represented by Capps have a pretty good rate of return thus far, but obviously we are striving for 100 percent.ā According to a press release, the current return rate in Santa Barbara County is 72 percent; San Luis Obispo County is at 74 percent, and Ventura County is at 75 percent. Census workers began their door-to-door visits on May 1 to speak with people who have not yet turned in their census forms. The visits are strictly confidential, and no one will be asked about their immigration status, Cappsās office said. All workers carry identification to verify their involvement with the census. āIf a census worker comes to your door, please open it,ā Capps said. āGetting a complete count of our residents not only gives us a fuller picture of our countryās population, it helps ensure the Central Coast gets back its fair share of tax dollars.ā For more information about the census, call 1-866-872-6868.
