Each year, lives are lost and millions of dollars in repairs are incurred as a result of excavation crews inadvertently digging into pipelines. Avoiding those accidents will be the topic of the Pipeline Group’s annual ā€œPublic Education—Contractor Awareness Programā€ on Oct. 12 at the Historic Santa Maria Inn.

A free, catered breakfast will be available for people involved in excavation activities in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Following the breakfast, a brief safety program will stress the importance of accident prevention by identifying pipeline and utility rights of way, use of on-call systems, and the importance of working with pipeline and utility companies to safely excavate in the vicinity of underground facilities.

Sponsors for the event, which takes place at 7:30 a.m. in the Inn’s Kent Room, include ConocoPhillips, Plains Pipeline, L.P., and Venoco.
