Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) funded 80 CPR kits for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, where staff will lead CPR trainings for students.
In a press release from PG&E, the company said the donation was an effort to curb the “dismal statistic” of those who survive cardiac arrest: Less than one-third of those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital receive CPR from a bystander, and only 10 percent survive.
The CPR kits include DVDs with step-by-step instructions and inflatable mannequins to practice chest compressions. District staff will use the kits to instruct on hands-only CPR, which helps provide ongoing blood flow to the vital organs while the person in cardiac arrest awaits emergency responders.
According to the press release, hands-only CPR gives “the patient a much better chance of survival once responders arrive.”
