Law enforcement agents arrested a Los Alamos man on Friday, March 20, after a brief standoff that prompted a Highway 101 shutdown for several hours in both directions, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The standoff began around noon after sheriff’s deputies responded to a call that 56-year-old Ronald Carrari allegedly made threats to members of his family. Police said the incident stems from several days beforehand, when Carrari reportedly began making threats to family members in downtown Los Alamos.

When police arrived, Carrari reportedly locked himself, along with several guns, inside his house in the 9600 block of Highway 101. Police said the standoff lasted several hours and ended at 5:45 p.m. when they were able to get Carrari out of his house by using tear gas.

Carrari was later arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, resisting arrest, and being in possession of an illegal shotgun and illegal rifle magazines, said Kelly Hoover, the sheriff’s public information officer.

Following Carrari’s arrest, police searched his home where they reported seizing eight guns—three handguns, two shotguns, and three rifles—and several thousand rounds of ammunition. Seven swords and two ā€œfighting knivesā€ were also confiscated, according to police.
