On Aug. 6, students of the Allan Hancock College Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program will trade their scrubs for something more comfortable as they browse among souped-up cars at a fundraising event.
The students are welcoming all manner of bikes, cars, and motorcycles to the event. The show will open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Everyone is invited to attend. Entry fees stand at $15 for cars, and $10 for bikes. Donations are more than welcome.
The event will include food and beverages; several vendors, including Sweet Sprinkles, Handmade on Easy Street, a Scentsy representative, a Pampered Chef representative, and a Mary Kay representative, will be on hand selling merchandise.
There will also be a live DJ to liven up the atmosphere with some music. The event will wrap up with trophies awarded to various winners of the show.
According to Amanda McDonald, a first-year nursing student who volunteered to handle organizing the event, the money from this fundraiser will be used to help offset the cost of books and other fees that come with the nursing program.
āWe have 30 students and we are hoping to raise enough so that each student is given $500 to help with fees,ā McDonald said.
All of these fees are above and beyond the traditional tuition and costs for the school. Hereās a rough break down of the costs:
Fingerprinting: $60
Total test fees: $385
Graduation costs: $60
That amount doesnāt include money needed to pay for books, uniforms and other supplies.
āI would say that it costs over a $1,000 a year,ā McDonald said of the incidentals.
She just received her acceptance letter into the Registered Nursing program, which will cost her a little more than $4,000 for the year overall.
The nursing students hold a fundraiser every year to help with costs. This year, when they got together, one of the students came up with the idea of a car show.
McDonaldās uncle, Jim Castillo, is president of the Mad Bomerz Car Club. She decided to enlist his help when it came to putting together the car show.
According to McDonald, Castillo has been a tremendous help and has done a lot of organizing. To help promote the show and invite car buffs to attend, McDonald and Castillo have visited three car shows in the past two weeks.
āWe handed out flyers and have been putting up flyers wherever we can,ā McDonald said.
Other nursing students have helped with organizing vendors, and two of the nursing students bought the trophies to be given away at the event.
āI am learning a lot of the process,ā McDonald said. āWe are hoping to tone [costs] down for next year to help out the LVN students.ā
