Hello, Sun readers! For the past seven years I’ve used the byline Amy Asman, but I’ve decided that in my new capacity as program director at the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, I should go by my full name. No, I didn’t just get married. My husband and I are actually about to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary. I just thought it was time to tack Blasco onto my name in all aspects of my life.
We have some other new faces here at the museum, too, so we hope you’ll be able to stop by and say “hello” to our new program assistants, Jamie and G’Na. We’re also bidding a fond farewell to another program assistant, Yahary, who decided that after a year of hard work, it was time to focus more on school. All of us at the museum wish her the best of luck!
Of course, we have plenty of fun weekly activities for you and your little ones to partake in, including Tuesday Tales at 3 p.m., Preschool Patrol on Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m., Passport Thursdays at 11 a.m., and Science Saturdays at 11 a.m.
We also have two fantastic events coming up: R.H. Tesene Day on Sunday, Aug. 31, and the inaugural Super Hero Fun Run on Sunday, Sept. 28. R.H. Tesene was the museum’s main founding donor, who we honor each year during his birthday week with a free barbecue at the museum. Be sure to check out his BBQ Hall of Fame exhibit, which has dozens of local cattle brands!
The Super Hero Fun Run includes a 5K for ages 13 and older and a 1-mile walk for all ages. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at the museum, to be followed by the 5K at 9 a.m., the 1-mile walk at 9:15 a.m., and the Fit for Fun Parking Lot Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will feature booths, food, and lots of cool activities. So throw on your favorite super hero costume and get ready to get fit at the museum!
The Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum is at 705 S. McClelland St. in Santa Maria. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
