Danger Will Robinson! The Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics will bring a million-volt Tesla Coil to Orcutt Academy High School on Oct. 8.
The coil, which looks like a cross between a robot and a giant generator, will be on display beginning at 1 p.m. at the Harold Black Sports Pavilion on the Orcutt Academy campus, 608 Pinal St., in Orcutt.
Co-sponsored by the Endeavour Academy and the Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics, the event is intended to electrify student interest in physics, Orcutt Academy physics teacher Ty Fredriks said in a press release.
Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla coil in 1891. The coils are used to generate high-voltage electricity, as well as to conduct experiments involving electrical lighting, fluorescence, X-rays, and wireless technology.
