Teachers, public officials, students, and community members will discuss all things migration at Allan Hancock College’s fall 2008 Faculty Lecture Series, to be held every Friday at 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 24 on the Santa Maria campus.

The series begins on Sept. 26 with Migration Stories, featuring a faculty panel that will discuss personal stories of migration. Panelists include Klaus Fischer, Domenico Maceri, Tina Nunez, George Phelan, Sofia Ramirez-Gelpi, and Julia Raybould-Rogers.

On Oct. 3, the series continues with Teatro Aztlan: Esperanza’s Journey, a presentation of acting, reading, lecture, and music depicting the complex struggles and diverse aspects of a young girl’s immigrant experience.

Based on a true story, the drama will be portrayed by two Allan Hancock College staff members: Counseling Department Chair Yvonne Teniente-Cuello and Spanish instructor Ana GÛmez.

On Oct. 10, City Council member and Community Education instructor Hilda Zacarias will present Promise, Progress, and Immigration, a discussion on immigration policies set by the federal government, but that leave local jurisdictions with difficult pressures to address their impacts.

The series ends on Oct. 24 with Reflections: The “New Immigration,” presented by sociology instructor Alberto Restrepo. According to a press release from Allan Hancock College, “new immigration” is a sociological field of study focusing on America’s most recent wave of immigrants. Restrepo will discuss the nation’s immigration history, as well as address some of the facts, data, and myths surrounding it.

The presentations are free, but registration is required. For more information, call 922-6966 or 1-866-DIAL AHC (342-5242), Ext. 3209.
