Throughout October, the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is paying tribute to “man’s best friend.” For the second year in a row, the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is using the national campaign to encourage community members to adopt a shelter dog.

Shelter staff members are quick to list the benefits of adopting a dog, including companionship, health benefits, social interaction, and more. Dogs also encourage people to exercise, promote family relationships, prompt laughter, and act as a nonjudgmental audience and sounding board.

The adoption facility at 751 Black Road in Santa Maria is currently filled to capacity, according to a press release.
