Fast food fees went toward a good cause on Oct. 21 and 23, when staff members from five Santa Maria-Bonita School District elementary schools participated in McTeacher’s Night at five local McDonald’s restaurants.

From 5 to 8 p.m., staff members from Alvin, Battles, Bruce, Sanchez, and Tunnell elementary schools cooked and served hamburgers, fries, and drinks to students, their families, and community members.

In return for their services, the restaurants, which are locally owned by Ted and Cheryl Maddux, donated 20 percent of the sales from the three-hour event—approximately $3,257. Maggie White, public information officer for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, said in a press release that the money will go toward student activities, such as field trips.

School staff members got short training sessions at each of the restaurants before they were turned loose to prepare and cook food, take orders, serve drinks, and perform other tasks typically done by McDonald’s employees.

McTeacher’s Night fundraisers are sponsored by the McDonald’s Corporation and local McDonald’s franchise owners around the state.
