Bust out the garbage bags and pokers—it’s time to do some fall cleaning. As part of California Coastal Cleanup Day 2010, the California Coastal Commission and Santa Barbara County Public Works Department are encouraging locals to help pick up trash and debris at dozens of local beaches on Sept. 25.
Last year, according to a press release, more than 730 volunteers cleaned approximately 4,700 pounds of debris from 23 beaches and creeks. This year, the effort will expand to include more inland waterways with Creek Week on the South Coast and Project Clean Waterways in Santa Maria.
Cleanups will run from 9 a.m. to noon at 25 sites, including Guadalupe Beach, Blosser Basin, and Jamala Beach in the North County.
“Everyday actions impact the health and well-being of our oceans, waterways, and the animals that live in those environments,” event organizers said in the press release. “Coastal Cleanup Day demonstrates that people who care can have a positive impact on their environment.”
To volunteer, just show up at one of the specified beach or creek sites. A site captain will provide instructions and supplies. It’s recommended volunteers bring their own gloves, bags, or buckets to cut down on waste.
