On Aug. 5, Santa Maria business owner and philanthropist Jack Boysen officially announced his candidacy for a seat on the Santa Maria City Council at a press conference at the Betteravia Government Center in Santa Maria. Boysen was introduced to a crowd of more than a dozen supporters by 5th District Santa Barbara County Supervisor Joe Centeno, for whom Boysen used to work as an aide. Boysen, who also served for four years as a county planning commissioner, said the focus of his campaign will be fiscal responsibility and ensuring the public’s safety. ā€œI think I’ve worked all my life for this job,ā€ Boysen told the Sun. ā€œI think I’ll bring a fiscally responsible, common-sense approach to city government.ā€ Boysen is one of approximately 10 individuals to take out papers for the position, which will go on the ballot in November.
