The Lucia Mar Unified School District (LMUSD) published the details of incoming Superintendent Raynee Daley’s contract July 24. LMUSD met that night after the Sun went to press to take public input and vote on whether or not to approve the contract.

Daley will make $190,000 a year—$20,000 more than outgoing Superintendent Jim Hogeboom, but without a $20,000 annual stipend that Hogeboom received for “supplemental professional support”—a nebulous category covering magazine subscriptions, professional coaches, supplemental retirement plans, and the purchase of life or disability insurance. The “supplemental professional support” addendum was added to Hogeboom’s contract in 2011.

The proposed annual salary for Daley is comparable to San Luis Coastal Unified School District Eric Prater’s, which was $202,857 during the 2014-2015 school year, according to SLCUSD’s posted pay schedules.

Benefits in Daley’s contract include a $400 monthly car stipend, “for the purpose of maintaining a suitable automobile for transportation in performance of duties on district business,” two weeks of vacation, a year of severance pay in the event of termination, and a $12,000 stipend for a personal coach “for the purpose of supporting her in exercising effective leadership in the district.”

Daley is an internal hire who formerly served as the deputy superintendent for businesses services at Lucia Mar. She’s slated to replace Hogeboom, who left the superintendent’s office after slugging it out with the Lucia Mar Teachers Association over salary increases for most of the year.

Lucia Mar Teachers Association President Donna Kandel said that she appreciated the transparency of the contract and that it clearly outlined how Daley would be compensated.

“It’s all upfront,” she said and was optimistic with regard to the new superintendent and the school year to come.
