Parents: Looking for something educational your kids can do this summer? The Dunes Center and the United Way of Santa Barbara County have partnered to provide a free summer program for middle school students (those going into grades 6 through 9) called āFun in the Sun.ā The program will run from June 28 to Aug. 6, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
In the morning, students will do some environmental science activities, and in the afternoon theyāll work in groups to come up with community service-learning projects. The Community Action Commission will also serve a daily lunch. By participating in the program, students will complete 100 hours of service learning and earn $500 scholarships courtesy of the United Way. Students will also have opportunities to explore other community resources such as Oso Flaco Lake, Guadalupe Beach, and the Santa Maria Discovery Museum.
Currently, there are only 26 slots available in the programā13 in Guadalupe at Mary Buren Elementary School and 13 in Santa Maria at Abel Maldonado Youth Center.
