Just in time for All Hallows’ Eve, the Santa Barbara County Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering tips to ensure all vampires, witches, and goblins—and their parents—have a fun and safe Halloween.

According to a press release, the Red Cross suggests:

• Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.

• Cross the street only at corners, use crosswalks, and look both ways before
crossing the street.

• Don’t hide or cross the street between parked cars.

• Wear light-colored or reflective clothing so you’re more visible.

• Carry a flashlight to light your way.

• Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)

• Visit homes that have the porch light on.

• Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger’s house.

• Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating, and don’t eat candy with packaging that has been opened or tampered with.

• Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

• Trick-or-treat within a group. Don’t trick-or-treat alone.

The American Red Cross provides
services to more than 30,000 people in Santa Barbara County each year, and provides information on disaster preparedness and health and safety issues to thousands of children, seniors, and other community members.
