Allan Hancock College is collecting funds for the Marian Medical Center’s Mission Hope Cancer Center via the third annual Carney’s Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser.
The fundraiser, which runs online through Feb. 13, honors Hancock assistant basketball coach Larry Carney. Carney is a four-time cancer survivor, and also lost his father, mother, and younger brother to the disease, according to a Hancock press release.
Carney, who is currently receiving treatment after recently being diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time, has donated more than $6,000 to the cancer center in the past two years.
“I grew up in Santa Maria,” Carney said in the press release. “I want to keep the money local to help people in my hometown who are fighting cancer. My brother and many of my friends have received help from the Mission Hope Cancer Center. I want to make sure people in town who need assistance receive it.”
Hancock collected donations at its third Carney’s Coaches vs. Cancer event on Feb. 8, when the basketball teams hosted Moorpark in conference games. But the college will accept donations online at crowdfunding.hancockcollege.edu through Monday, Feb. 13.
Donations will go directly to the Mission Hope Cancer Center.
