Allan Hancock College officially launched a mentor pilot program with a meet-and-greet event Oct. 28, at the Children’s Discovery Museum in Santa Maria. The program pairs 11 Hancock students (mentees) with two mentors. Each student will be mentored by one college faculty, staff, or administration member, as well as by one community volunteer.
Hancock’s Associate Superintendent/Vice President of Academic Affairs George Railey, Santa Maria City Manager Rick Haydon, as well as local business owners Pat Cusack and Jay Hardy are mentors in the pilot program.
The students selected for the program range from student-athletes to student government leaders to student-parents to first-generation college students.
Volunteers and administrators have been training and planning for months to start the program on the Hancock campus.
