Allan Hancock College planned to host events in honor of the sixth annual International Women’s Day on March 8, which intended to celebrate women’s social, economic, and political achievements, according to a Hancock press release.

It was the college’s second consecutive year hosting the on-campus event, which included guest speakers, performers, organic food, and a free concert. The theme was “Be Bold for Change,” according to student activities coordinator Stephanie Robb.
“Our entire program focuses on empowering, respecting, and appreciating women, as well as teaching women tools for success,” Robb said in the press release. She added that the event catered both to women and anyone who appreciates women.
The workshops comprised three presentations, including one that focused on female entrepreneurship and one on methods of reducing violence.
The free concert included spoken word and a performance by musician Joelyn Lutz, whose career started in an all-female rock band. Lutz has been teaching music since 2002.
“I want to raise awareness about the importance of self-care and self-love,” Lutz said in the release. “I feel like women suffer from what I call the ‘not-good-enough’ syndrome.”
