Know any children who want to go to summer camp, but might not be able to afford it?

Limited funding is still available for recreation ā€œcampershipsā€ for the 2008 summer day camp program, according to a press release from the city of Santa Maria.

There are only three weeks remaining in the summer camp program, but financial assistance is still available to help pay for camp enrollment. However, each family is limited to receiving four recreation grants per calendar year.

Designed for children ages 6 through 12 years old, this year’s program, ā€œGOT CAMP?ā€ will run through Aug. 18, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Camp programs include learning about healthy eating and physical activity; cooking, self-care, and conflict resolution skills; and altruism through community service projects. Plus, children can participate in activities such as swimming, games, sports, and arts and crafts.

Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis at the Minami Community Center and the Preisker Park Nature Center. The cost is $95 per week for full-time (more than six hours per day) and $65 per week for part-time (less than six hours per day).

The scholarships are available through grants from the Santa Barbara Foundation and The People For Leisure and Youth (PLAY). Children must have completed Kindergarten in order to qualify.

For registration information and recreation grant application forms, and to receive information on the teen and sports camps, call the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department at 925-0951, Ext. 260, or visit the department office at 615 South McClelland St. in Santa Maria.
