Need to improve your concentration and sense of personal peace? Allan Hancock College Community Education is offering a free summer tai chi and chi gung class that will meet every Wednesday, June 16 through Aug. 4, from 3 to 4:55 p.m. in the dance studio at the rear of the Lompoc Civic Auditorium, on Cypress and L streets.

Chi gung, meaning ā€œenergy-increasing exercise,ā€ involves easy stretching and deep-breathing exercises. It’s been used in China for centuries to maintain health, body flexibility, and emotional well-being, especially for adults as they age.

Tai chi is a slow, graceful martial arts form also practiced for emotional and physical health.

Instructor Steve Dunlap has been teaching at Hancock for 10 years. He holds degrees in psychology and physical education and began practicing relaxation, tai chi, and chi gung as a college student in the 1970s.

ā€œI saw the emotional and physical benefits of these techniques in myself first of all, and for many years now I’ve seen my students experience wonderful improvements in their personal well-being,ā€ Dunlap said in a press release.

Between the two sets of exercises, students will enjoy a 20-minute session of guided relaxation to cultivate inner peace and emotional well-being.
