An unoccupied building on the 800 block of West Church Street in Santa Maria was destroyed by a fire on April 1.

The building, which has been used for various purposes in the past, was reportedly fully engulfed in flames when the Santa Maria Fire Department arrived on scene at about 6:30 a.m. that day, according to Training Battalion Chief Mike Farmer, who served as incident commander during the incident.

One ladder truck, four fire engines, an ambulance, and four to six Santa Maria police responded to the fire, Farmer said. Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo fire engines also provided coverage in the area while the Santa Maria Fire Department handled the incident, he said.

Farmer said the fire was contained within a half hour and fully extinguished roughly two hours later. There were no reported injuries, he said, and neighboring structures were not damaged.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
