On Monday, Aug. 17, the Santa Maria Police Department reported a shooting at 11:10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Greenacre Drive, where they say a father reportedly shot his 24-year-old son in self-defense.Ā

According to Sgt. Russ Mengel, the father and son were having an argument that evening. It’s not clear why they were arguing, but Mengel said that the two had an apparent strained relationship for many years.Ā

With a kitchen knife in his hand, Mengel said that the son—identified as Alberto Flores—charged his father, who shot once at his son, hitting him in the arm. The injury was non-life-threatening, Mengel said.Ā

The father, who isn’t being identified by the police, wasn’t injured.

Flores was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injury. Mengel said that Flores was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.

The father isn’t suspected of committing a crime, Mengel said.Ā
