A man suspected of driving while intoxicated has been booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, after a May 28 traffic collision killed 57-year-old Santa Maria resident Lyvelyn Reyes.
The suspect, 29-year-old Sergio Chagolla-Chagolla, was allegedly driving while drunk when his vehicle collided with another at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Donovan Road in Santa Maria, according to a press release prepared by Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) Sgt. Duane Schneider. SMPD officers responded to the two-car accident shortly after midnight on May 28.
The collision sent five passengers to Marian Medical Center, where Reyes died from injuries sustained in the accident, Schneider said in the release.
The SMPD is requesting that any potential witnesses to the accident contact the department at 928-3781, Ext. 2297.
