If you’ve ever thought about adopting a cat, now is the time to do it. June is Adopt a Cat Month in Santa Barbara County and to celebrate Animal Services is hosting a month of feline-focused events.

For the month of June, all adoptions for cats older than six months will be discounted from $55 to $45. The fee for any black or black and white cat has been reduced to $35. Animal Services will also be offering microchips for cats for $10.

According to shelter officials, only about six percent of stray cats that enter the shelter are reclaimed by their owners. Animal Services is trying to change that statistic by offering reduced cost microchipping. Microchips can be implanted at any of the county’s three animal shelters between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments aren’t necessary.

Santa Barbara County Animal Services will partner with Companion Animal Placement Assistance, the Santa Barbara County Animal Care Foundation, and Animal Shelter Assistance Program to host several special events throughout the month.

Diamonds are a cat’s best friends on June 20 when the Lompoc Shelter and Santa Maria Animal Center host a “Black Tie Affair” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., during which each adopted cat receives a rhinestone collar.

All three county shelters—the Santa Barbara Shelter at 5473 Overpass Road, the Lompoc Shelter at 1501 W. Central, or the Santa Maria Animal Center at 548 W. Foster Road—are open for adoptions Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
