St. Mary’s of the Assumption students re-enacted the Passion of the Christ and performed Living Stations of the Cross on April 18. More than 15 middle school students participated, playing Jesus, Mary, Roman soldiers, and other prominent figures.

In a press release from St. Mary’s, school Principal Michelle Cox said that students look forward to the performance as an annual tradition.

“Their performance brings the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ to life,” Cox said in the press release. “Our students and families look for ways to give back to their community, and this is one opportunity to join the faithful during the days before Easter, when we rejoice.”

The 14 Stations of the Cross is a sequence that follows Jesus Christ’s suffering and death during his last day; from Pontius Pilate’s condemnation of Jesus to crucifixion and death. The school’s press release said that millions of Christians around the world would observe the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, which was April 18, the Friday before Easter.

“We are entering the most sacred time of year for the Catholic Church, starting with Christ’s crucifixion and culminating with his resurrection,” said Father Rolando Clarin, the church’s pastor, in the press release—which came out before the performance. “Watching the students is very moving and helps bring our understanding to a higher level.”
