The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and the United Way of Santa Barbara County announced that 25 students from Northern Santa Barbara County earned $500 scholarships for their work in the center’s ā€œFun in the Sunā€ summer program.

The pilot project, for sixth through ninth graders, incorporated a service-learning component from the Corporation for National and Community Service’s ā€œSummer of Serviceā€ program and focused on increasing literacy, encouraging environmental stewardship, and citizenry. The program also included a lunch program, ā€œLunch Bunch,ā€ which recruited business professionals, scientists, and city officials to encourage students to excel in school.
