During February, the Discovery Museum is traveling back in time and studying local history. Every week, our free programs will focus on a special theme related to the history of Santa Maria. We will learn about the Chumash Indians, Spanish influence in our region, and the history of ranching and agriculture. We have lots of history-related activities and guest speakers planned for the month of February and want kids of all ages to join the fun.
“Tuesday Tales” will feature pre-school-level stories that have historical relevance to the Santa Maria Valley. Preschool Patrollers can join us every Wednesday morning to learn about some of the buildings, people and artifacts that contribute to our history. “Twilight Thursday” will allow school-aged kids the chance to learn things like the meaning behind traditional Chumash dances and how important trains and the railroad were and continue to be for Santa Maria’s agriculture.

The museum’s branding exhibit, donated by R.H. Tesene, showcases the history of some of the area’s most prominent ranchers every day! So come on down to the Discovery Museum and learn about our local history.
