United Blood Services has given its first-ever school club award to a group of students from Delta High School for organizing a blood drive earlier this year. The high school’s community service club was randomly selected to receive the $250 award based on nominations submitted by schools in San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Barbara counties.

And Delta’s students weren’t the only ones to be recognized by United Blood Services; Social Science teacher John Emery was also named Heroic Teacher of the semester. Emery has been a blood donor for more than 34 years.

ā€œI know he [donates blood] as often as he is able to do so,ā€ read one nomination submitted on Emery’s behalf. ā€œI consider this the greatest act of generosity that a person can do to save another person’s life.ā€

In addition to these awards, United Blood Services is also giving out $1,000 college scholarships to students who help organize blood drives. The deadline to apply for scholarships is May 7.

Local students interested holding blood drives or applying for scholarships can contact United Blood Service’s San Luis Obispo center at 543-4290 or e-mail ubsccinfo@bloodsystems.org.
