The Santa Maria City Council on Sept. 7 approved liquor licenses for two Walgreens locations, and denied a license to a local convenience store.

By 4-1 votes, the council approved requests for ā€œType-20ā€ beer and wine sales licenses at Walgreens stores at 2399 S. Broadway and 707 N. Broadway. The In In Out Market at 560 E. Betteravia Road, suite E, also sought a liquor license, but was rejected by a 4-1 vote.

City staffers recommended denial of all three requests, determining the applicants hadn’t adequately demonstrated a public convenience or necessity.

The two Walgreens stores will sell beer—only six-packs or more—and won’t stock 40-ounce bottles.
