An overnight hospital visit is a necessity for some children, but being away from home and all its familiarities and comforts can be an unsettling experienceāor even a scary one.
Members of the local Girl Scout Daisy Troop 50507 recently worked to bring a feeling of home to the Marian Regional Medical Center Pediatric Unit by decorating pillowcases with permanent markers and donating them to the hospital.
Together, the Santa Maria-based Girl Scouts decorated 36 pillowcases with colorful messages of love as part of a project designed to focus on sharing with others.
In a press release to the media, Troop Leader Vonda Damore explained that one of the troop members has a sibling battling cancer who has dealt with the realities of hospitalizationāand from having to sleep away from home. That knowledge prompted the girls to develop the idea of bringing a taste of home to the children who have to stay at the hospital for their medical care.
āItās an extra, added comfort while the young patients are here in the hospital,ā Director of Pediatrics Candice Monge said in the release. āWeāre so appreciative here in the Pediatric Unit to have these pillowcases and be able to give them to our patients.ā
