The Sun would like to clarify some information printed in the May 17 news story, “Total recall?” According to Maggie White, a spokesperson for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, the district hasn’t paid board member and former employee Will Smith since he took his seat on the Board of Education because the district believes doing so would violate the settlement agreement they reached several years ago.
“Mr. Smith disagrees but has not been successful with any legal action to require the district to resume settlement payments,” White said.
Like all board members, Smith receives a monthly stipend of $400 if he attends all board meetings, as well as access to district health benefits.
