Tree plantings at elementary schools are one way Santa Maria Recreation and Parks will honor Arbor Day and celebrate the city’s 32nd year as a Tree City U.S.A.

Tunnell Elementary School, Sanchez Elementary School, and Los Flores Ranch Park will get planted the week of March 7 to 14. Tree-planting festivities at each site include poem recitals and educational activities designed to teach children about the importance of maintaining their quality of life through tree preservation.

Recreation and Parks will also award prizes for their inaugural Arbor Day Photo Contest. The contest is open to all ages, and prizes go to the top three photos capturing images of Santa Maria’s trees. Submissions are accepted through March 4. Entries must be original and submitted to dsmitherman@ci.santa-maria.ca.us.

For more information, call Recreation and Parks at 925-0951, Ext. 260.
