The Santa Maria Utilities Department will put more than 60 classroom-ready activities in the hands of kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers with Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) on Dec. 5 and 6.

It’s a free workshop that will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. both days at Shepard Hall in the Santa Maria Public Library, 421 S. McClelland St. Workshop space is first-come, first-served, and advanced registration is required. The deadline to register is Nov. 29.

Project WET is a national environmental education program that promotes awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of water resources.Ā

The activity and curriculum guide illustrates water quality concepts—the physical and chemical characteristics of water, the connection of water to the Earth’s systems, how water resources are managed, and how water resources exist with social constructs.

Participants will receive updated Project WET curriculum, the latest activity guide, and access to the new Project WET website portal. Teachers will also participate in several activities that they can use in their own classrooms and learn about water education programs in Santa Maria.
