More than 250 children under the age of 12 drew, painted, or colored illustrations showing how they would keep Santa Maria’s city parks free of trash and playgrounds free of second-hand smoke.
It was part of the Santa Maria Parks and Recreation Department’s Clean and Clear City Parks Campaign. The city partnered with PLAY, People for Leisure and Youth, Inc., to offer a poster contest through various afterschool programs within the community. Poster entries were judged based on the inclusion of trash-free parks, smoke-free playgrounds, creativity, and overall effort.
First place was awarded to Kevin Olivera, second to Ricardo Zeferino, and third to Jesus Medina. Olivera’s art will be made into an 11-inch-by-17-inch poster that will be displayed at local government offices and facilities. All three winners were awarded prizes, and their artwork will be posted on the PLAY, Inc. website, santamariaatplay.org.
