The U.S. Census Bureau is now hiring about 1,000 people in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties in preparation for the 2010 Census.

The bureau is accepting applications for jobs in its Field Operations and Quality Assurance departments, whose duties include address canvassing and following up on those who haven’t responded to census mailings. The jobs are temporary, running from January to March, and hourly pay is expected to be between $15.50 and $17. Bilingual applicants are especially encouraged.

Requirements include reliable transportation and passage of a written test covering basic math and map skills. Training is paid, and employees will receive reimbursement for mileage.

Among other things, census data will be used to calculate grants and funding for nonprofits
.
The Bureau’s Santa Maria office is located at 124 W. Carmen Lane.
