Salud Carbajal, Santa Barbara County’s 1st District Supervisor, has been appointed to the National Associations of Counties (NACo) Board of Directors for fiscal year 2011-12. He will also chair NACo’s Environment, Energy, and Land Use Steering Committee.

NACo president Lenny Eliason said he appointed Carbajal to the position because be believes the South County supervisor will be
an asset.

“He’s a hard worker and has the ability to build consensus, and [he] understands the issues that are put before the committee,” Eliason said.

Carbajal’s expertise will be used to help decide NACo’s lobbying efforts.

“It is critical that county officials speak with one strong voice before Congress and the administration. This is best accomplished through a respected and effective national organization like NACo,” Carbajal said in a statement.

Carbajal was appointed as part of the yearly NACo presidential election and committee selection process. He fills one of 125 seats on the board of directors as one of the president’s 10 “at large” appointments. He has worked with the Environment, Energy, and Land Use Steering Committee since 2005, and he has also served on NACo’s Green Government Advisory Board.

The Environment, Energy, and Land Use committee lobbies for legislation pertaining to environmental pollution; solid and hazardous waste management; and the use of water, energy, and land resources.
