The Allan Hancock College bookstore has stocked up on merchandise from the nonprofit Save the TaTas Foundation to promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This month, 95 percent of the proceeds from bookstore sales will go to Student Health Services to pay for breast cancer awareness education on campus. The remaining five percent will benefit the Save the TaTas Foundation.
āStudents, especially young students, may not believe that breast cancer can affect them at this time in their lives,ā Alex Bell, Student Health Services coordinator, said in a press release. āItās our goal to make sure that they are aware and informed.ā
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and accounts for nearly one in three diagnoses, Bell said in the release. Thatās why, in addition to offering items for sale, the bookstore will be providing free packets with information on ways to help prevent breast cancer, the best methods of early detection, and a list of treatment and prevention resources available to women on the Central Coast.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Month promotion is one of several partnerships that the bookstore has formed with various programs on campus to support causes that are important to students. The bookstore is in the Student Center on the Santa Maria campus and is open Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.
