On Dec. 23, two kayakers paddling their way down the Santa Ynez River discovered a body floating near Refugio Bridge, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department reported in a recent press release.

The two men—locals Jared Rossman and Jonathan Davis—immediately contacted law enforcement officials and waited with the body until their arrival. Members of the Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue Team were called in to retrieve the man, whom authorities later said appeared to have been deceased for several weeks.

Authorities said there’s currently no evidence of foul play. Department spokesman Drew Sugars said an autopsy was planned for Dec. 28 to determine the man’s identity and cause of death.
