Students from Taylor Elementary School are preparing for colder weather by helping locals in need. Members of Mario DiCarlo’s third grade class are collecting used coats and jackets for the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter. Friends, family members, and people in the local community are being asked to clean out their closets and donate clean garments in good condition.
The project came about when student Alicia Rodriguez decided to run the coat drive for extra credit. The third grader was in charge of making posters and spreading the word to her fellow schoolmates. She then contacted the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter and offered the clothing.
DiCarlo said that his students, including Rodriguez, are aware of the tough economic times and the fact that the government is low on funds to help out charities like the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter.
“Think about how happy it will make you feel to see someone with your jacket on and a big smile on their face,” the students wrote in a letter that was sent home to Taylor families. “Big government won’t be able to help the shelter, but big hearts will.”
Since the coat drive began, Rodriguez’s parents have already delivered 25 bags of coats and other clothing.
Another trip to the shelter is scheduled for the end of the month. To make a donation, contact Tunnel at 361-7940.
