On June 11 at approximately 3:45 p.m. deputies responded to a report of an “out of control” camper who appeared to be under the influence of some sort of controlled substance and swinging two axes at campers at the Paradise Campground near Paradise Road and Highway 154, according to Kelly Hoover, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

When the police arrived they learned that 25-year-old Ilya Yegudkin of Los Angeles had assaulted several campers, including his own friends, as well as an elderly male who was sitting in his truck, Hoover said.

Yegudkin allegedly fought deputies when they tried to restrain him and one deputy received a cut on his face, Hoover said, but not from the axe.

During the struggle, Yegudkin received several injuries and was transported to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. The deputy, whose injuries were minor, was treated and released.

Yegudkin was booked in absentia on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, felony resisting arrest, battery causing serious injury, and physical elder abuse.
